High-grade steel is an umbrella term for stainless, corrosion-resistant steels. These steels contain at least 10.5% chromium (Cr) and are much more corrosion-resistant than unalloyed steels. Over its long history, high-grade steel has gained importance in an increasing number of machining areas thanks to its corrosion resistance and outstanding mechanical properties. More than 1 000 machining companies have come together to form the trade association Warenzeichenverband Edelstahl Rostfrei e.V. and use this registered trademark. Austenitic chromium nickel steels offer and almost ideal combination of workability, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance. They are therefore suited to many different applications and are the most important group of stainless steels.

Stainless steel A1 (AISI 303/305)

The A1 steel grade designates the "traditional turning steel" and is suited to simple machining, such as shape cutting. Because of their high sulfur content, steels of this steel grade are less resistant to corrosion than similar steels with a normal sulfur content.

Stainless steel A2 (AISI 304)

The steels of grade A2 are the most commonly used stainless steels and are known as "classic high-grade steels". For example, they are used for kitchen appliances and in apparatus construction, but are not suited to use in non-oxidizing acids and media containing chlorides, such as swimming pools or seawater. The A2 steel grade belongs to resistance class II.

Stainless steel A4 (AISI 316)

The steels of grade A4 are "acid-resistant steels" alloyed with molybdenum and have much better corrosion resistance. Large quantities of the A4 steels are used in the pulp industry because this grade was developed for boiling sulfuric acids (hence the name "acid-resistant) and is also suited to environments containing chlorides to a certain extent. A4 is also frequently used in the foodstuffs industry and shipbuilding and belongs to resistance class III.

Stainless steel A5 (1.4571- AISI 316Ti)

A5 steels are more resistant to corrosion because they are alloyed with titanium (>5xC to max. 0.8%) for stabilization. They also belong to resistance class III. They are used in inadequate constructions and constructions with moderate levels of chlorides and sulfur dioxide.

Stainless steel 1.4462 (AISI 318 LN) DUPLEX

Steels of the 1.4462 grade belong to the stainless, austenitic-feritic high-grade steels. The feritic high-grade steels, know as chromium steels, are steels with a chromium content of 12 - 18 % and a very low carbon content (< 0.2 %). These steels combine the greater strength of ferritic chromium steels with the corrosion resistance of austenitic, chromium nickel steels. Belonging to resistance class IV, steel grade 1.4462 offers particularly good resistance to pitting and intergranular corrosion. This high corrosion protection, coupled with the favorable mechanical properties, means that it can be used for a huge number of purposes.

Stainless steel 1.4529 HCR (high corrosion resistant)

The highly corrosion-resistant 1.4529 steel grade is the highest of all stainless, austenitic, high-grade steels and therefore offers particularly good resistance to chlorine-induced stress corrosion (in accordance with DIN EN ISO 3506) and to local signs of corrosion such as pitting or crevice corrosion. The 1.4529 steel grade therefore also belongs to the highest resistance class V.
